  • Title: Perceptions of the Dynamics of Team Care and Communication During Resuscitations in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit An Interview Based Qualitative Study

Abstract

Aim: To explore team members’ perceptions of factors influencing teamwork and communication in resuscitations in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Design: This descriptive qualitative study explores teamwork and communication as aspects of care in the neonatal intensive care unit. Semi-structured interviews were conducted in an urban academic center's neonatal intensive care unit.

Results: Three main themes: 1) How team members view each other, 2) Organizing around anticipated priorities in care, 3) Families are integral in high stakes events. Conclusion:We conclude that participants perceive that effective neonatal intensive care unit teams demonstrate positive team affect, they plan and organize their work, and their care is patient and family-centred.

Profession implications: These findings raise awareness that positive team affect, team organization, and family-centredness are perceived as impacting the delivery of effective care during resuscitations in the neonatal intensive care unit and may be addressed when training and supporting high-functioning teams.

Impact: Understanding better what makes team communication effective and seeking strategies for its improvement is paramount to effective patient care in the neonatal intensive care unit. Previous studies do not give insight into team members’ perceptions of how effective team care is achieved and the factors impacting team efficacy in the neonatal intensive care unit. We found positive interactions between the team, team organization and planning, and a family-centered approach to patient care impact the care during resuscitations in the neonatal intensive care unit. Impacts health practitioners, educators, and quality/ safety administrators in the neonatal intensive care unit.
