  • Title: Supporting Health Decision Making for People with Intellectual Disabilities: A Co Designed AI Communication Approach for Nursing Practice

Abstract

To explore how generative artificial intelligence can support nurses in facilitating accessible communication and supported health decision-making for people with intellectual disabilities.
Methods
A concept development study was conducted using literature relating to supported decision-making, inclusive communication, person-centred care, and artificial intelligence in healthcare. Evidence from intellectual disability nursing and health communication was reviewed to inform the development of a co-designed AI communication framework.
Results
The analysis identified communication accessibility as a major barrier to meaningful participation in healthcare decision-making. Existing evidence supports the use of Easy Read resources, visual supports, and personalised communication strategies. A conceptual framework was developed demonstrating how generative AI could assist nurses by translating complex health information into accessible formats, generating personalised discussion prompts, and supporting person-centred communication while preserving individual autonomy and decision-making rights.
Conclusion
AI-assisted communication tools have the potential to strengthen supported decision-making and promote more inclusive nursing practice for people with intellectual disabilities. When guided by nursing values and co-design principles, these approaches may improve participation, autonomy, and health equity.
