Pediatric suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth ages 10 to 24 years old. Surveys of pediatric practices have found that as much as 85% of providers report trouble connecting patients to mental health providers. As a result of increased suicidality and lack of outpatient resources, emergency departments have taken the brunt of the mental health crisis and report not being equipped for case management of mental health issues. The Bridge Program at Children’s Health was developed to fill the gap from discharge from the emergency department following suicidal ideation or attempt and connection to community providers. Research has shown that approximately 50% of those discharged from the emergency department do not have a follow-up mental health appointment within 30 days. The Children’s Health Bridge Program will provide four weeks of individual and family therapy, using the evidence-based practices of Safe Alternatives for Teens and Youth- Acute (SAFETY-A) and Attachment-Based Family Therapy (ABFT) to provide stabilization, paired with care coordination to increase connection to community providers for longer-term follow-up mental health care. Children’s Health is a nonprofit hospital that accepts all insurance plans and offers financial assistance, reducing barriers to immediate care. By providing this care, we hope to save countless lives, empower parents, and increase collaboration between the hospital and outpatient teams.
