Biography

Richard A Lawhern, Ph.D., is a technically trained healthcare educator, public health policy analyst and patient advocate, specializing in pain and addiction management.  His doctorate (UCLA 1976) is in engineering systems and his first two careers were as a USAF officer and senior systems engineer. He also has three decades of research experience as a healthcare writer, with over 350 published papers, articles, and interviews as author or coauthor. His papers have been cited over 350 times on Google Scholar. He is a co-founder and principal speaker emeritus for the US National Campaign to Protect People in Pain (https://www.ncp3.org).  He was recognized as a significant healthcare influencer in 2025 by Marquise Who’s Who.  Two of his online continuing medical education courses are accredited by the Postgraduate Institute for Medicine.
